<p>《白虎通》曰：王命法：三十受兵、六十歸兵。國有三軍，所以誡非常，伐無道，尊宗廟，重社稷，安不忘危。何以言有三軍也？《論語》云：「子行三軍，則誰與？」《詩》云：「周王于邁，六師及之。」三軍者何法？法天地人也。以爲五人爲伍，五伍爲兩，四兩爲卒，五卒爲旅，五旅爲師，師二千五百人，二師爲一軍。三軍六師，萬五千人也。傳曰：一人必死，十人不能當；百人必死，千人不能當；千人必死，萬人不能當；萬人必死，橫行天下。雖有萬人，猶謙讓自以不足，故復加五千人。因法月數，月，群陰之長也。十二月足以窮盡陰陽，備物成功。萬二千人亦足以征伐不義，致天下太平。《豰梁傳》曰：「天子六軍，諸侯上國三軍，次國二軍，下國一軍。諸侯所以一軍者何？諸侯，藩屏之臣也。任兵革之重，距一方之難，故得有一軍也。」</p>

<p>《唐書》曰：高祖起義兵，命太宗將兵徇西河郡，下之。癸巳，建大將軍府，以裴寂爲長史，劉文靜爲司馬，具設官屬，始置三軍，分爲左右：以公子建成爲隴西公，左領大都督，左三軍悉隸焉；命太宗爲敦煌公，右領大都督，右三軍將軍悉隸焉。開倉庫以賑窮乏，遠近響應。</p>

<p>又曰：高祖二年秋七月壬申，詔曰：「天生五材，司物資其器用；武有七德，撥亂所以定功。故黃帝垂裳，尚有阪泉之戰；放勛光宅，猶稱丹浦之師。禁暴安人，率由茲道；創業垂統，莫此爲先。以是周置六軍，每習蒐狩；漢增八校，畢選驍勇。故能化行九有，威震百蠻，奸宄不興，虔劉息志。季葉淩替，軍政湮亡，卒伍不修，旌旗舛雜。部伍符籍，空有調發之名；逗撓之興，竟無討襲之用。遂使夷狄放命，盜賊交侵，戰爭多虞，黔黎殄喪。朕受天明命，撫育萬方，爰自義師，克成帝業。至如超乘之士，莫匪百金；彀騎之材，豈惟七萃。今雖關塞寧謐，荒裔肅清，伊洛猶蕪，江湖尚梗，役車未息，戎馬載馳，武備之方，尤宜精練。所以各因部校，序其統屬，改授鋋鼓。創造徽章，取象天官，定其名號。庶使前茅後勁，類別區分，玉帳絳宮，刑德允備，蹈茲湯火，譬彼椒蘭，大定戎衣，止戈斯在。於是置十二軍，分關內諸府以隸焉。萬年道爲參旗軍，長安道爲鼓旗軍，富平道爲玄武軍，醴泉道爲井鉞軍，同州道爲羽林軍，華州道爲騎官軍，寧州道爲折威軍。歧州道爲平道軍，幽州道爲招搖軍，西麟道爲苑游軍，涇州道爲天紀軍，宜州道爲天節軍。時高祖以天下未定，實資武力，將舉關中之衆，以臨四方，故興此制也。每軍一人，副一人，取威名素重者爲之，督以耕戰之務。自是士馬精强，無敵于天下矣。</p>

<p>《五代周史》曰：顯德初，世宗自高平還，乃大閱，帝親臨之。帝自高平之役，睹諸軍未甚嚴整，遂有退却。至是命太祖皇帝一概簡閱，選武藝超絕者，署爲殿前，諸班因是有散員、散指揮、內殿直散、都頭、鐵騎、控鶴之號。覆命總戎者自龍捷虎捷以降一一選之，老弱羸小者去之，諸軍士伍無不精當。由是兵甲之盛，近代無比。</p>
